McDermott is most commonly known as artist and designer to notable producers in the wine world over the past two decades, with fine art and original work at the core of his practices. His personal work involves an interest in Earth systems - biology, ecology, technology and climate. His use of encaustic and beeswax is an embrace of simple colors, natural and local materials. Central to the forms and process of this work is difficulty of control, this lack of precision makes for spontaneous, energetic paintings.
